Google 2-Step Verification Makes it Harder to Hack Your WoW Account
Google Mail introduces a great new security feature that should stomp more than a few WoW account hackers.
Basically, Google Mail now has an optional feature that, when activated, permits entry to your e-mail only after providing the password and a randomly generated password sent through your mobile phone.
Your e-mail password got stolen? Don’t worry, your mobile phone is safe and therefore they can’t get past the second requirement. This is exactly how the Battle.net authenticator works.
Curly-haired guy does a better job explaining this than I ever will, so watch this video:
So how’s this all going to protect my WoW account?
Anyone who’s ever had his Battle.net-linked e-mail hacked knows how quickly this leads to an account theft. A hacker who breaks into your e-mail can then try to re-set the WoW account password and use the new password sent to gain full access to the account.
Then, hackers can go to town, selling WoW Gold and removing all dignity from your toons by turning them into SusanExpress-like chat spammers.
Google 2-step verification basically closes off this e-mail vulnerability – so that’s one thing less to worry about. But don’t think you’re 100% protected yet. That will never happen, especially if you keep on using the same passwords for your Battle.net login and other registration sites, and keep on clicking on suspicious links in e-mails.
So switch to Google Mail to up your security, but remember that there’s no better protection than constant vigilance.
