EGF’s Top Anti-Spam Add-ons in World of Warcraft

I’m amazed at the number of people who go through World of Warcraft without ever installing an anti-spam add-on. And I think it’s also a big shame.

The only excuse for not having one installed is if you’re a wildness-type roleplayer who insists on camping outside of towns, repair bots and all. Everyone else should get these certified terrific anti-spam add-ons:

BadBoy –the most popular and most downloaded anti-spam add-on, Badboy has single-handedly prevented thousands of players from falling prey to Gold spammers who want to bait you with their hack links. But another useful feature to this lightweight add-on is the ability to condense repetitive macro messages into a single line on your trade chat window.

Most notably, it’s one of only two in the list that’s updated up to the latest Cataclysm patch. Good boy, Badboy.

SpamBayes – international spam-haters, fear not. SpamBayes has you covered in Cataclysm with its efficient brand of Gold spammer protection. It’s computer code-esque Control Center interface may scare the occasional casual player, but it can be hidden. Plus it’s quite intuitive to use for your custom anti-spam preferences. Updated for Cataclysm 4.0.3a.

SpamMeNot – an intelligent anti-spam add-on that detects even space and number substitutions, (e.g. 3 for letter e, 5 for letter s, etc.) SpamMeNot has also been programmed to be compatible with the popular WoW Instant Messenger chat add-on and can even prevent people from a certain level from whispering you. Not updated for latest Cataclysm patch, only up to 4.0.1.

SpamThrottle – the adjustable timer for filtering out repeat messages helps separate the acceptable amount of constant LFG calls from the Gold spam. Like the one above it, SpamThrottle has only been updated up to patch 4.0.1.

SpamSentry - this add-on was last updated in patch 3.3.0, but I threw this in as a sort of clarion call for the MIA author to give it an update. SpamSentry had its own set of followers, what with its “sophisticated heuristics” that gives very meticulous protection against SusanExpress and her ilk. Like Badboy, it also had a simple spam reporting feature for those bots that manage to pass through the filter undetected.
